SECTION 6.

Silver Pass to Selden Pass: Mono and Bear Creeks (20.0 miles)

Along these next miles of the JMT, you will travel the farthest from the Sierra Crest and often at lower elevations. Be sure to enjoy the expansive forests, as they will become sparser as you head south and higher. But now you should enjoy the excellent view south, where you can observe much of your route to the top of Selden Pass. Seven Gables is one of the most dramatic peaks, and its sub-peak, to the west, has the seven namesake gables or ridges, running longitudinally down its north face. As you descend the sandy trail, note that the vegetation is different on the warmer, southern side of the pass. Approaching Silver Pass Lake, you walk alternately across stretches of alpine meadow and open, sandy flats. The latter are inhabited by Belding’s ground squirrels resembling miniature groundhogs in shape and in behavior as they stand upright and stare at you from their burrow entrances. The JMT curves eastward, away from Silver Pass Lake, but if you wish to camp here, you will find several sandy tent sites nestled among pines at the southeast end of the lake.
